About us

Secunda

Secunda got its name after being Sasol's second refinery for oil from coal after Sasolburg.

We are found in an area of the country known as "Cosmos Country". Lying in the south western part of Mpumalanga against the Free State and Gauteng borders, Cosmos Country includes the towns of Secunda, Balfour, Bethal, Delmas, Greylingstad, Leandra and Standerton.
Although we home to the world's largest underground coal mining complex, Cosmos Country is full of beautiful pink and white cosmos flowers when blooming in late summer.

At the last count Secunda was a town with about 40,000 inhabitants. It came to be as a result of the construction of Sasol Two in 1980.
Sasol mainlky produces synthetic fuel and diesel (and related fuels and petrochemicals) through coal gasification.

Significant growth has been experienced in the past couple of years due to the expansions at the Sasol complex. We boast a fantastic golf course, an exciting waterfront and enough retail outlets to satisfy any visitor.

The tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere
The tallest structure in Secunda also happens to be the tallest free-standing structure in the Southern Hemisphere.
It is the 301 metre high chimney at Sasol Three.
The chimney consists of four refractory brick lined concrete flues, each with a 4.6 metre diameter.

Of course, Secunda can also boast to being the home of Kasteel Guest House.
